Tribal Connctions 2019: Supporting Language Preservation and Revitalization in Tribal Communities

Please join us for the second annual Tribal Connections event. In North America, at least 52 Native American languages have disappeared. Globally, more than 6,000 languages face eventual extinction, prompting the United Nations to declare 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

In order to build awareness of the importance of language preservation, Tribal Connections attendees will take a self-guided tour through the world-renowned Heard Museum. They will visit different pieces that reflect on the importance of language and events that contributed to Indigenous language loss. At the end of the tour, they will have the opportunity to engage in table discussions about what individuals and communities can do to support language preservation and revitalization in tribal communities.

First Things First recognizes that visiting sacred spaces, seeing artifacts and reflecting on history can bring up many strong and difficult emotions. For those needing a quiet place to reflect, the Education Garden at the Heard Museum will be available throughout the evening. The Education Garden is also available to any attendee who wishes to cleanse with their sacred herbs at any point during the event.

Ideal for program staff, managers and policymakers working in tribal communities. Space is limited, so register today! The cost is $20 per attendee with no onsite registration.
