Day of Karelian and Vepsian Writing

On April 23, 2024, the House of Friendship of the Leningrad Region hosted an event dedicated to the Day of Karelian and Vepsian Writing. The event was attended by representatives of the ANO “Center for Indigenous Peoples of the Leningrad Region,” Mari, Karelian, and Vepsian ethnocultural organizations of the region, as well as linguists and enthusiastic researchers.

Marina Vatagina, head of the Leningrad Regional Branch of the Interregional Public Organization for the Support of Cultural, Ethnic, and Folk Traditions “Karelian Commonwealth,” gave a lecture titled “Newly Written Karelian Literature. A Brief Overview of the Book ‘100 Years of Karelian Literature. Time. Searches. Portraits.'”

Olga Numan, head of project activities of the Leningrad Regional Public Organization “Vepsian Community,” introduced the project “Vepsian Family Readings” and conducted a master class on weaving a protective bracelet.

Semyon Pozdnyakov, a representative of the youth wing of the “Vepsian Community,” presented a book on the Vepsian epic “Virantanas.” Maxim Kuznetsov, a research fellow at the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a teacher of Vepsian and Tatar languages, spoke about his translation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” into Vepsian and shared that a group of linguists is currently working on translating “The Myths of Ancient Greece” into Vepsian.

This collaborative platform was established to enable the community of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022–2032) to share events, activities, and resources. The content published on the platform is the responsibility of registered users and does not commit the Secretariat of the Decade (UNESCO) and/or the Members of the Global Task Force for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages. Please note that the platform has been inactive since February 2025 and no longer accepts new uploads. While work is underway to provide an updated solution, the Secretariat of IDIL 2022–2032 remains available for any inquiries at: indigenous.languages@unesco.org.
