On August 7, “Obdorsk fortress” hosted the events dedicated to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

The feast began with a fumigation ceremony. The guests entered the historical and architecture ensemble to get in touch with the culture and traditions of the peoples of Yamal. During the celebration, Tatyana Lar and Valentin Valgamov pleased the guests and the residents of the city with songs in their native and Russian languages.

The program of the celebration included a creative meeting with Elena Pushkareva, Doctor of Science in Historical Sciences and folklore researcher. The author presented her book “Gastronomic Meetings” with a tasting of fish dishes.

As a representative of the Nenets culture, the author demonstrated a typical diet of the Arctic peoples of Russia, and stressed its connection with the laws of nature, as well as the influence of the rich animal and plant world of the area on the diversity of northern cuisine in the 20th and 21st centuries. Elena Pushkareva also emphasized the huge influence of rivers and seas (as the main breadwinners) on the diet of northern peoples.

Food, like much else in nomadic life, has changed. The author showed these changes in the diet of her tribesmen over the past hundred years. Elena Pushkareva also explained how the food assortment influenced eating habits and culinary preferences of the indigenous peoples.

According to Elena Pushkareva, venison and fish remain the basis of the Nenets diet. The researcher told that her favorite dishes were venison soup, bone marrow and fish tails.

The book is illustrated with photographs of Nenets dishes from purely traditional ones to the creative interpretations of public catering companies.
